Would any of you be up for doing me a BIG favour and coming round to help sand down my stairs in the near future? It'll take me ages but if we can get off the worst of it as a team effort that would be a big help. Naturally I'm offering free alcohol and baked goods to sweeten the deal!

Yeh I will help - you going to rent an electric sander? Alex had a pretty beefy one when he did his bathroom floor.

Don't really know, I'm all for anything that makes the job easier though!

Yeah so I would've thought an electric sander would be a bit too heavy duty, probably have to do it all by hand unfortunately

depends how thick the paint is your taking off - might be a lot easier just to get a small one.

Possibly a palm sander might help a little but it's a bit intricate

Yeah it's just the varnish that needs to come off, it's all pretty intricate so if I can get a few of you round armed with sandpaper hopefully we can do the majority of it between us

What are you actually doing with it after you've sanded it anyway?
You re-staining it a diff colour or you painting it?

I thought that might be the case, in which case you dont need to worry to much about getting it all down to the bare wood so it's all the same colour for a re-staining.
As long as it's all smooth it'll be gravy!

Yeah my Dad said it would take forever to get it down to the bare wood cos I was considering it staining it a nicer colour, but shouldn't be too bad just taking the varnish off ready to paint over it. It's just all the fiddly lil corners that are gonna take ages but a team effort should do the job, plus you all sound like you know a lot more than me about such things!

A spiral staircase would be better use of space in your place I recon dave. I say we build one :>
