This one was a cracker at the end of last week from our office in Shrewsbury!
Just when you think that there is nothing left that an app can improve, something completely new and utterly brilliant comes along. Check out the app that promises to transform the way you play your favourite pub quiz.
Speedquizzing is the future
The Speedquizzing app is the brainchild of ex Shed Seven drummer Alan Leach, along with his brother John, who provides the tech development side.
They came up with the idea after Alan decided there must be a way to link up modern tech with the pub quizzes he had been running for years. And they soon found there was.
What makes it great?
It’s great for the teams and the quiz master, making it easy and fast to run. The benefits of speed quizzing come in many forms, from the huge database of questions the developers have sourced to the instant results from the central computer.
Teams can also use their mobile device as a buzzer for quick fire rounds and the way the questions are asked, answered and marked means there’s no longer any room for that bane of the pub quiz - cheating.
Players can download an app from iOS or Google Play and any mobile device compatible with these operating systems will work - it can be a tablet or a smartphone and just one is needed per team.
How does it work?
The quiz master simply downloads the Speedquizzing software onto a laptop and the teams download the free app to their smartphone or tablet.
Questions are selected randomly from the massive database, meaning there is no chance of pulling the exact same quiz twice. Subjects covered are many and varied and all come together to make an eclectic yet balanced quiz for customers to enjoy.
As marks are instantaneous Speedquizzing cuts out the boring faff that comes along with many pub quizzes, while teams wait for their papers to be marked and argue the toss over answers. With Speedquizzing it’s crisp, efficient and finally drags the pub quiz into the 21st century.
The tech used is slick and sophisticated and the team have made it a seamless experience for the quiz master and quizzers alike - all in all a pretty perfect example of how an app can take something that’s already great and make it even better.
Great second income
The beauty of Speedquizzing is it’s great to play but it’s also great to run your own quiz night using the software. It could work out as either a good second income or provide some part time hours for you, while giving you the opportunity to work for yourself.
Speedquizzing launched in 2012 and the app has been really successful with Speedquizzing events going on throughout the UK, in some parts of the US and even reaching Australia.
The app and tech is easy to use from both sides and provides a fuss free way to play - what are you waiting for? Give it a go!
Had a really good day at Drupal Camp North West in Manchester yesterday. Lots of very good Drupal 8 talks and a lot to discuss back in the office tomorrow.

It’s Britain’s favourite game, and while winning isn’t everything, everyone yearns for the chance to shout "Bingo!" at the top of their lungs - even if it's just at the computer screen.
Bingo is a chance game, but the internet is still full of advice on how to increase your odds, often based on the musings of mathematicians. Some players do seem to have an edge, and there are several competing theories as to why this might be. Let’s have a look at some of the more popular ideas.
For years, blackjack players have practised the dark art of “card counting”. Casinos seem to think it works, as they tend to ban players for using the technique! Some bingo players swear by counting bingo balls. The maths and statistical theory is complicated, but the general idea is that your chances of winning are improved by playing for longer, rather than buying several cards for the same game.
On the other hand, thousands of regular players contradict this idea by playing multiple cards at the same time! At a bingo hall, this does seem to make more sense – up to a point. Play too many cards, and you’ll lose track; but it does appear to be a skill that can be learned and improved on, so start small and work your way up! Online, sometimes the number of cards you can play is limited; though the handy Auto-Daub function certainly helps you to keep up with the numbers.
Now we turn to the somewhat confusing Tippett Theory. L.H.C. Tippett predicted that a player’s chances are improved by knowing whether a game is likely to be short or long. The best way to work this out, according to Tippett, is to check the pattern on the card. Certain shapes such as Four Corners take more time to win than others.
For a short game, you should pick a card with numbers at the extremes of the range, i.e. close to 1 and 75. For a longer game, choose numbers closer to the middle of the range, i.e. 38. It’s a complicated theory and the statistics don’t necessarily back it up, but if you want to try it out it may be worth a go in a free game first!
An obvious way of improving your chances of winning would seem to be to choose a game with as few players as possible. The downside here, of course, is that often (if not always) the prize money will be based on the number of people playing.
Luckily, bingo’s not always about winning. There’s the social aspect – see how popular online chat functions are at sites like online.bingo.com/. And besides, it’s just fun to play!

I take my MacBook Pro almost everywhere, its my centre point for work and entertainment. As a result it's prone to getting knocked and occasionally dropped. I've had many cases over the years, from the practical, to the over-protective, to the minimalist but none have really cut it for day to day use.
The Snugg MacBook Pro 15 Wallet Case comes in either black or brown, it's faux leather exterior is soft yet sturdy giving good protection to the laptop inside.
My three year old MacBook Pro fits tightly within the case, subsequent models are thinner and should slide in and out slightly easier. The cases magnetic flap stays attached to the case when closed.
Inside the case there is a small holder for either a business card, SD Card or USB stick and behind the case there is additional storage for paper or small booklets.
The case is light compared to the heavy MacBook Pro and doesn't increase the overall size for carrying purposes by any large margin. The case is designed to easily fit under your arm.
The Snugg MacBook Pro 15 Wallet Case is available for $35.99 (£23) with world wide delivery and comes with a lifetime guarantee.
