Geographical Student Locator

For my final year project I looked at GIS in the University environment. I gained a first for this project and have made it available for download for use in other academic projects. The project was designed as a Computer Science implementation however much of the theory can relate to a Geographical or GIS subject. Please note that only the report is available for download, the actual implementation in ArcGIS as well as all the data are not available. I will be happy to answer any questions regarding this project, please do so through the ImAFish contact page.

Report Abstract

"This project looks at Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in the University environment and how it can be applied to visualise student data. The implementation demonstrates how you can plot student’s home addresses from various years on a UK map within the application ArcGIS. I have developed a program in VB.net to count and format data that has then been used in ArcGIS to display student demographics across the country.

I have used real student data for over 4700 full time students demonstrating proof of concept.
This visual assessment is new for Coventry University. Working closely with the Recruitment and Admissions department at the University we have been able to see that a large number of students come from the Coventry area as well as Birmingham. Very few students come from Warwickshire even though there are good transportation links. This sort of analysis is what my system has been able to achieve.

This is a new area of study for me and I have learnt a lot about GIS and its applications, I have also learnt a lot about other Universities and how they use GIS through my research. I have concluded that the application of GIS is useful for the university and they could take this further forward for a range of data analysis thanks to my research and system. "
